Are you ready? Starting July 4th over 120 Magby descendants from across the country will finally meet. The descendants of a single enslaved woman will all come together for the first time to celebrate our nation’s freedom from England, and our ancestors freedom from slavery. 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves in Confederate held states like Alabama and Georgia. Though we are still searching, it is pretty safe to assume that Babe Magby and the oldest of her two children, Tom and Augusta, were freed by that very important proclamation. Babe’s youngest son Chris Magby, was the first in our family to be born in freedom in 1873. So this July will be special for our family for many reasons. This year we will celebrate freedom and family in the place where it all started, Chambers County, Alabama. May our ancestors smile down on us as we return to our home land.
